Bekkal

Bekkal is lauded as the biggest fort of Kerala sprawling across 40 acres. From a distance you could get a glimpse of this marvelous fort standing lofty in a hillock transcending time, accompanied by the elevating music of the sea and the splash of waves which entertained it and fondled it all throughout these years. This ancient monument enticed historians, tourists, nature lovers for centuries and those visited again revisited it falling prey to its subtle beauty.

Bekal Fort is located 16 km south of Kasargod on the national highway in the district of Kasargod of northern Kerala. Kasargod district is famous as the land of gods, forts, river and beautiful beaches. The contemporary Bekal Fort was developed to its present stature by the Bekkal Resorts Development Corporation (BRDC). The site is beautified by the installation of two sculptures of Theyyam and walls which are adorned with murals created by artisans from Nilambur. There is also a rock garden in the premises made under the social forestry scheme. A wide parking area consisting of 7000 sq. m of land makes parking very easy. To explore the beautiful fort and its shores a walkway has been laid. After the sunset you don’t have the leave the beach soon, the entire beach and the walkway is magnificently illuminated and the beach gets another shade of beauty during the night. There is a children’s park in the location for children below 14 years of age. Resting facilities like multi shed and eru-madam (tree house) are provided to the tourists to take rest and enjoy the sea breeze. On reaching the top of the fort you could see the towns in vicinity like Kanhangad, Pallikare, Bekal, Kottikkulam, Uduma etc. The age-old religious harmony of the place is evident from the Mukhyaprana Temple of Hanuman and the ancient Muslim Mosque.
