Cherai
On traveling 30 km from Kochi, you could reach a splendid serene beach which is free from all hullabaloos that is common in beaches like vendors and large crowds, so for the lovers of composed beach experience, this is the exact place. Located in the northern end of Vypeen Island, this golden beach is 10 km long and is shallow, clean and a best place to take sunbath and to go swimming. At the far end of the beach you could see a line of Chinese fishing nets.

The beach is accessible from any part of Kerala, on reaching High Court junction you could get boat service to Vypeen Island and from there to the island or else you could catch a straight bus from Ernakulam. From Vypeen a forty minutes drive can take you to Cherai.

Cherai Gowreeshwara Temple
Cherai Gowreeshwara temple is the famous Hindu temple and is also called the “Kerala’s Palani”. Every year a festival takes place in the temple and is considered to be the biggest in Ernakulam District. A display of caparisoned elephants is the main attraction. This festival takes place every year during the last two weeks of January or first two weeks of February.
Azheekkal Sree Varaha Temple
Another famous temple in Cherai is Azheekal Sree Varsha Temple. This temple is famous for its majestic chariot and one of the oldest temples owned by Gowda Saraswatha Community.
Vypin Island
It is know as an island with the highest density of population in the world. There are regular boat services from Kochi to the island and is also connected via bridge from Kalamuku. History says that the island was formed as a result of the flood in the year 1341 and is 27 km long.
Cherai Beach
The beach is 15 km long and is good for swimming and sun bathing as the beach is shallow, clean and serene. The newly refurbished 400 meters of beach showcases a walkway, and high Mask Lamp gives a heavenly glitter during night and has a children’s park. There are also water scooters and speed boats available for the visitors to take a ride in the sea. Security is on guard 24X7 and they are ever ready to help you.
Portuguese Fort
This fort was built in the year 1503 by Portuguese and is also known as Aya Kotta. Considered to be an outpost build to defend the famous Mussori Port, it was captured in 1661 by the Dutch and handed over to the Raja of Thiruvathankur in the year 1789.
Pallipuram Church
Pallipuram Church was constructed by the Portuguese in the year 1577. In the top of the altar you could find a beautiful picture of Ave Mari which was brought from Portugal.
Every year on the month of August there is a celebration to commemorate this. At that time water parade of boats is highlight of the celebration.
Munnambam Beach
Opened in the year 2009, this beach offers to its tourist’s facilities like walkways, playground etc. It is the tip-end of Ernakulam district and the Vypeen Island. From here you could see the Munnambam harbor also.
Variety of Hotels, restaurants and bars are available there in Cherai. Range of Cuisine consists of International, Chinese and Indian dishes. Don’t forget to relish on the seafood, which is Kerala specialty.
Cherai beach is a perfect beach for swimming, snorkeling and surfing. Apart from these, if you are lucky you could spot a heron or stork in the search for its prey.
