Thekkady

Thekkady is a spectacular place in the district of Idukki of the state of Kerala. The name itself invokes in our mind images like elephants in green background, strings of hills and spice plantations and tea estates. Adjacent to these plantation lies the rich jungles of Thekkady, it is now the most captivating Wildlife Sanctuary called Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary which was declared a Tiger Reserve in the year 1978. The Periyar Lake gives opportunities to its visitors to view the canopy of green forest and the spot some wildlife in its natural surroundings.

Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary

Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is spread across 777 sq. km and the most fascinating fact is that, out of this, 360 sq. km is thick evergreen forest. It was declared a tiger reserve in the year 1978. The lake formed by the construction of the Mulleperiyar Dam offers to its visitors views of wildlife while traveling in the lake. Herds of elephants can be seen in the banks of the river bathing and frivolous.

Kumily

Kumily is well known for its spice plantations like pepper, cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, tea and coffee. It is 4 km away from Thekkady and is also a famous shopping center.

Periyar Lake

Within the sanctuary lies the Periyar Lake, and is famous for its boat ride. During the boat ride people come across herds of elephant and wild animals like gaurs, bison, wild boars and many other species.

Pandikuzhi

Pandikuzhi is located 5 kms from Kumili. It is a great place to go for trekking and for wildlife photographers you can click umpteen snaps.

Mangala Devi Temple

Top of the peak, 1337 m above sea level, hides this temple among dense woods. From the hill top you could see the views on the either sides of the Western Ghats. To visit this place you require permission from the Wildlife warden at Thekkady which is granted only during the Chithira Pournami Festival Day.

Challarkovil

Challarkovil is famous for its illustrious plains and its tumbling waterfalls during the monsoons.

Vandiperiyar

Vandiperiyar is a famous trade center and is a home of number of tea factories. The river Periyar flows through this town and irrigates the vast tea, coffee and pepper plantation on its bank. There is government agriculture and flower garden, which has to its credit a wide variety of rose plants, orchids and anthurium.

Vandanmedu

Vandenmedu could be reached by traveling 25 km from Kumily. It is one of the worlds largest auction centers of cardamom.

Pullmedu

Pullmedu lies at the top of a hill. Spiraling journey through the mountains takes you to this beautiful grass land and from here you could see the panoramic view of all the hills around including the Sabarimala Temple hill. These hills are the habitat of rare flora and fauna.

Nature and Bird Watching Trek

The forest department provides opportunity to go for wildlife trekking in the sanctuary. A wonderful world of rare flora and fauna is open to you to be explored. The guides are local tribal people who have sound knowledge of wildlife and the different kinds of plant life over there. They are thorough with every nook and corner of the region and you will be safe in their hands.
